Thursday holds a special place in our home—a day dedicated to the beauty of vegetarianism from dawn till dusk. It’s a day of waving goodbye to onions, garlic, fish, and meat and welcoming the joy of a purely plant-based menu. This Thursday morning, I decided to whip up a delightful breakfast: the Poha recipe without onions. Come along with me on this culinary adventure as we create a tasty and wholesome onion-free poha.

Creating Onion-Free Poha Recipe:

Poha, also called flattened rice, is a beloved breakfast dish in India, cherished for its simplicity and rich flavours. Today, we’ll discover a version that sticks to our no-onion rule, ensuring that every spoonful is a burst of deliciousness.

Onion-Free Poha Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of thick or thin Poha (flattened rice)
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 medium-sized carrot
  • 3-4 beans, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of roasted peanuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • Lemon juice for serving

Onion-Free Poha Recipe Instructions:

  1. Start by rinsing the poha in a colander under running water for about 2 minutes. Gently swish them around to ensure even rinsing. Let them drain thoroughly and set them aside. Add salt and turmeric powder, and mix them well.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add the curry leaves to the pan. Sauté for a minute.
  4. Add carrots, beans, green chilies, and salt, and sauté until the veggies become slightly tender. Add roasted peanuts. Stir well.
  5. Carefully add the rinsed poha to the pan. Gently toss to combine all the ingredients. Be careful not to break the poha while mixing.
  6. Let the poha cook on low heat for about 3–4 minutes. This steaming process will ensure that the poha softens and absorbs the flavours.
  7. Add sugar and garnish the poha with fresh coriander leaves, and squeeze some lemon juice over it for a tangy kick. Mix gently.
